I suppose Japan has some really good movies, and most of them I do like.

The are some occassional really amature plot and directored movies like Sukimoto..

The movies I have seen so far and liked are:
Death Note 1 and 2
Battle Royale was too gory..

Nana 1 and 2 <3
Detective Conan <3
Prince of Tennis <3
Lovely Complex
and some more..

I haven't seen to many movies from Japan, but I have seen Ghost Train, Azumi, Moon Child and Last Quarter they are pretty good, not the best but still satisfying

Death Note for sure, its story line is way really thrilling, the anime is somehow less so.

I'm not sure about the best, but if you ask me what I like the most, I'd say Death Note. I really love live-action L

I'd say my favourite Nihhon Films are...
Seven Samurai - Kurosawa Akira (the inspiration for the Magnificent Seven and the anime Samurai 7),

Ichi The Killer - Takeshi Miike (The most blood strewn gore ridden yakuza Vs. assassin film made; some things in it mean I can now watch any horror film and laugh at how lame the ideas of torture/cruelty are.)

Battle Royal Films - Excellent representation of the post modern effect of the degeneration of moral guidance & communal values, with governmental interfering and nanny state-ing affecting and leading to younger generations rebelling; causing the 'BR-Act'.

Akira - What is there to say, a classic anime film, that was one of the most expensive animes made in its generation, not to mention the sheer influence of it is simply unimaginable. Love Kanada's bike too, which you can now in Japan by a kit to make a running road legal Kanada 'look-a-like' bike.

Ghost In The Shell - another classic anime film, nearly as influential as Akira, just as hardcore.

Ninja Scroll - yet another classical anime film, containing some love interest, minor ecchi and action, could be argued to have led to Rurouni Kenshin and others as well as leading western males to be interested in Shounen anime.

The Ring - So much more than the Yankee version. Sorry for the term yankee, USA never seems to be able to remake a non-native film or tv series and make it any where as good as it was (foreign films, English comedies; Faulty Towers aka Payne etc), Nuff said.
