History and political ties aside..
I found Japanese rather nationalistic.. They love their own country(not like theres anything wrong)..
And while playing Maplestory Japan, I realise that the Japanese players dont really like foreigners.. theres some Japanese that deliberately disturb foreigners.. wonder if its the foreign community's fault or what o.o

i dont know if the community in a game reflects reality very well.. but i do agree actually. im reading this blog written by a swedish woman who lives in japan. she says japanese people are very nationalistic, and of course that isn't allways very good...
id be surprised if japan had any less of it than sweden. we aren't really that a patriotic and nationalistic country, still many people believe they have more right to be here than for example arabs (it is actually the best example), and wish to kick them out of the country. i believe these swedish people are retarded though. i guess its more or less the same in every culture

We should all consider remembering that Nationalism led to the deaths of many in Europe (napolean!)

But that aside, nationalism typically leads to war, its the basis of pride between countries

yes and sadly there are far worse examples... cant not mention hitler, i suppose.
i dont really like nationalism but it would be hard to avoid. people group together, instinct or so i guess... yea probably instinct: we must have an instinct to find stupid reasons to kill

nationalism is the bane of peae and unity, since it invariably also brings it those nutcases who think everyone else is worse than themselves. on that note its probably approipriate ot mention that while it is possible to work in japan on a temporary basis its not encouraged greatly to migrate there since they have an absurdly strict policy on that, in some areas of the world that strictness is a result of them trying for racial purity. which can get very messy sometimes cos it strikes up images of Hitler and his supposed Aryan race. plus that action realli doesnt help when given the fact that some americans are hardcore nationalists to the max shouting out that americans are the best and rule the world, thankfully that is only a minority shared by ignorant and misguided ppl.

Nationalism isn't bad. If you read into Japanese history, it was nationalism that pushed Japan into the Meiji Restoration that built Japan to be completely equal with military and economy to the European countries in the 1800s. The only Asian country to do that, which is quite extraordinary and awesome. However, one can say nationalism did push Japan into WWII with the axis making them cocky enough to attack everything around them....

I was there, on and off, between 2000-2004, and regardly how we feel about the society (or how young society believes), Japan is a highly, highly xenophobic country.

White people, foreigners, are treated as wonderful people to meet...but they aren't allowed to live there.

Japan has ZERO immigration, which actually is causing them a problem as they are in negative population growth - they are actually losing population, so who is going to take care of their aging society?

As other's mentioned later on, even Koreans and Chinese are viewed negatively.

Now there is a difference between how the normal Japanese thinks, and how its institutions (Read: government and policies) are structured. The typical Japanese might be open minded, but this has very little effect on governmental, racist policies.

And the farther you get from Japanese-ish (read: skin color), the more likely the Japanese citizen will come closer to the governmental policies.
