thats Only the Dvd's I have...

When I started watching anime, there was no public internet, around 87 or 88 and it was only on VHS that had 2 eps or one movie on it for around 40$ ....

Most of my VHS were destroyed when the storage unit I had them in got flooded

If you want cheep what for the thin packs... full season for around 30$ is not bad...

Hey, more old school!

Kilson - *nods* That's around my time as well. And I still hate Viz for that **** they pulled back then. I had to way 20 _years_ before being able to afford Maison Ikkoku (and one day I'll feel the need to see some Ranma 1/2). I just didn't have the money for $40 a tape. When something came my way, I watched it many times...even if it was crap. I think the quote from this webpage says it best:

There was a time, not too long ago, when [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] fans in the United States, starving for product, would eagerly devour any title they could get their hands on. They liked something specifically because it was anime; there was no such thing as an “A-List” or “B-List” title because everything was considered excellent simply for being what it was
So when things came along that were at least decent (El Hazard, Tenchi Muyo) Those I watched even more. Destroyed some good tapes. I also remember saving up 200 bucks to buy a VCR just to hook it up to a friends to do some dubbing.

Ezikial - Yep, I remember when anime went down to a 20/30 split. And the rumor that went around is when one of the President's of these companies was asked why the difference in price, especially because dubbing costs a lot more then subbing, he answered: "Because we know they will pay'.

Cheeky bastard, and he was right. I always went subs. I know at first it was better to have English, but don't you remember some of the horrible, horrible dubbing they used to do back then? *shivers*. I met some English seiyus, and they confirmed how badly planned such dubbing takes place. They hire people, don't even let them work with the other actors, and don't even give them copies of the Japanese version! They just read lines...which is why, if some of you had noticed, that in early English animes the voices in the first 5+ episodes change later on, as the voice actors get 'into the groove' of the character.

But about being Stoned...er....their are children around....*shhhhh*

BTW, if you two wish, I set up a thread here:

*nodnods*

Please enjoy.

What really salted our wounds was this: We _knew_ there was better!
But we couldn't have it.

We knew that DVDs and downloads were the future, but then we had to wait 12 _years_ until the technology (in a mass market) catches up with the knowledge.

I mean, if I say 'LD" what would you think?
These were Laser Discs, they were about the size of a record yet could only hold about 60 minutes of video, without much else. Because they were better then VHS, other countries went hog wild - but they never really caught on in the states.

Japan was crazy for them, but we knew the DVD had already been developed (yeah, its already 20 year old tech, just getting that into people's hands is another issue) - this was back in..what? '93? 95'?

The sad thing was, when I visited Japan between 2000-2001, was the complete dumping of LD's by every anime store you could find. Discs that used to cost $80, now costing about $8, and even then they weren't selling.

Anyway, point is: Yeah, its good to be young!

Although, have you ever seen something in an anime, futuristic-based, that you really wish you had?
Personal robot, fold up laptop, holographic screens, etc?

Something that's conceivable, maybe even invented yet, but just isn't marketed yet.

ps
rewinding video tapes sucked.
Completely, absolutely, sucked.
There just was no choice.
