Star Wars
Yeah...yeah...cliche nowadays. But being that I'm one of the very few people on this board who actually saw the movie in its original release (not the special additions), I can say how much it effected my life. In a way, its the same how LOTR effects you youngin's. I still remember leaning over towards my father and asking him to read the words up on the screen (The opening scrollwords that appear at the beginning of every Star Wars film), he had to do it for Empire Strikes back too, but by Return of the Jedi, I could read them just fine. And although 'Greedo firing first' is a bunch of crap, I will admit that Han gutting him scared the wits out of me. Hell, so did the trash compactor monster, let alone the Wampa - then again, I was very very young. And HAD to have as many Star Wars toys as I could get! Hell, I still think the collection exists downstairs in my parent's home. Better get them now before they sell the place. But its 100's of miles away. Hmmmm. I also still remember, before we could afford 'Spot' (our nickname for our AT-AT), that we had to pretend to be an Imperical Walker ourselves approaching the battle lines. Look, back then all we had was the Atari 2600, and highly repetative games, Ok? We didn't have high-definition-anything. Hell, we didn't even own a VCR! Those things were $1,000+ back then, with hardly any tapes available. The VHS-Beta fight hadn't even started yet! (Which is why Sony was NOT going to let Blu-Ray lose to the Samsung's HD video) But back to the movie: I still found myself being one of the rare 'Luke Skywalker' fans out there...everyone wanted the liberating scoundrel Han Solo. F*** the actual hero of the story: the Jedi. Yeah, he was a whiny farmboy in the first film, it's called 'character development' you ass! Instead he gets that label, while Han gets the sexy 'scoundrel' label..and no one instead labels them from the last film where Luke kicks ass, and Han gets pu**ywhipped (then again, there is something to be said about falling in love, and remaining loyal too, a princess - I just hate how all the Han-lovers out there overlook this blatant fact). Normally I do not go into these details without being around my normal cohort. But this thread did ask about our 'experience'. But to give its larger effect, let me tell you about this last experience, given the movie. It was my freshman year of college, I was 18, most of the guys around me were 18 as well...and drinking beer, but that's something they should not have been doing. It was almost 2am in the morning, and someone, out of nowhere, dropped this bombshell: Did you know that all freshmen in high school will be born AFTER Star Wars came out? I was 18....and I never felt so _old_ in my life. |

Quote:
And I speak mostly of the first three movies (4-6), and even though as a kid I didn't like it (Luke lost his hand! The Rebellion lost the battle of Hoth!), Empire was still the best movie and gave a space flick some much needed meat to push the characters beyond a Sunday Serial. Unfortunately, other then a few decent moments (mostly provided by Yoda), the last three movies (1-3) were visually stunning, and soporifically sully. Dead language, weak plot....why do I have to cheer for the Emperor because that actor hit the character perfectly, unlike most others? A damn shame, and a great loss. I fear (though will be happy with) that the new animated movie will be better than 1-3. |
