I knew a guy who said he doesn't watch anime because it looks so childish. Well, he had seen some episodes of the main-stream anime aimed for, like, 10-13 year old boys. Anyways, I showed him Ghost in the Shell the movie and Akira, and it changed his opinion about the matter. Last time I saw him he had checked out Totoro (Out of his own will), an anime that might be viewed as 'for kids' if not known properly. Of course, Totoro works for kids as well, but equally good for adults.

I think anime shows are often mistakingly taken as "kid shows" because they often kiddified (some parts cut and the dialogues changed) even series like Pokemon, which is already a kid show from the start

this is all true but the only way to heal the misunderstandings of non-otaku would be to have more anime go main steam and for the otaku who wish to view it demand that the anime not be butchered just so th companies can show the shows on prime time. probably the best way to go about that would be to get as many otaku as possible to send mail, snail or e-, to all the big name companies and let them know that if they stop turning gold into crap and brought more over we would be more incline to view them on our tvs, instead of the internet, as well as buy the box sets, provided they give good extras; actor commentaries, deleted scenes, bloopers(burst angel for example), and the omakes, you know real extras not t-shirts and keychains, though they are nice. sounds like i got off topic but this would help make anime main stream and heal the misunderstandings that afflict so many people.

Once again I'll say this, the whole reason anime is associated with kids is because of advertisement. They sell crap from the childish anime because kids will want it for no reason. If more adult oriented anime gets more advertisement, it's popularity will grow. For those of you who don't know, there are American live action versions of DBZ, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Avatar in the works or still in the development stages. If this isn't proof that anime is starting to become more mainstream then I don't know what is.
