Default Looking for a good video converter

Ok I want to convert a lot of rmvb and mkv files to mp4 or avi files so I can play them on my Ps3. Does anyone know which ones are good. I prefer them to be free but if there is no such thing as a good converter for free, then tell me the cheapest good ones.

Well for MKV I use ALLtoAVI I think that's what it was called. If I remember correctly it was open source. Though converting MKV get's complicated as the programs don't always detect the subs and when they don't you have to extract the subs and then hard code them in while encoding to MKV.

I've never converted RMVB to AVI xD

I'm using River Past Video Cleaner for MKV to Xvid, and yeah the subtitles don't show, guess I have to extract the subs and maybe just try adding them if that works?

total video converter can add subtitle when you are converting, but you need to extract subtitle first.

mkv is a tough one to convert, good luck. there are ways, but i've yet to find a perfect one

rmvb is easy though. I personally use Xilisoft's rmvb converter, it is fast, quality of the converted file is near identical to the original, and while it isn't free, the interprising internet user can easily discover free versions

and for future reference, Xilisoft's rather massive library of converters are often the best around for almost any job

Cool thanks guys. Was trying to get some files to play on my Ps3, but it zooms in too much when it stretches the video and cuts off some of the picture. Gonna wait a bit to see if sony makes some sort of update for this.

do this: Use a DVD making program for what you want to watch. Use this: http://www.anime-planet.com/forum/fa...-dvd-free.html. It has all the programs included with a step by step walk through. Of course it takes some time just like a vid converter would but then you have everything in dvd format and you can mount it to a dvd and play it anywhere. I use it and I love it.
