Fanservice

I was trying to think about what I should write about in my first official blog and I can up with a few ideas. Out of all the ideas I came up with fanservice seemed like the most interesting topic to discuss.
For the one or two people who don't know what fanservice is, it is essentially putting characters in sexual situations. This can come in several different forms. For example the classic pantyshot, an event such as a gust of wind or a charcter tripping in which the eventual outcome is the exposure of a females panties. Fanservice can also include bouncing breast, large breast, exposed breast, main male character doing a face plant into a female character's breast... see a pattern here yet? From my experience I've noticed that most fanservice is usually related to female characters. There are some cases where they include fanservice for females as well, but I usually tend to stay away from those series.
Now that we're educated on what fanservice is, we can now move on to its relevance in anime and manga. I'll admit I love fanservice, it adds a little extra to what can be a generic series. The main question is rather or not fanservice is necessary or not. In the big scheme of things, no its not necessary. Sexual situations are not needed, because some people will enjoy the series with or without fanservice. The point where fanservice becomes relevant is to help determine what the main audience of the series is geared towards. A series with plenty of fanservice is generally geared towards the male crowd. I'm not saying that there are no fanservice heavy series that the main audience is female, I'm just saying that most of this type of anime usually targets males. Ok now with that out of the way I can come to one conclusion, males, including my self, are perverts and will be drawn to shows, movies, games, etc with promises that we will see sexual things. For some proof you can check out the ecchi club here on the forum and see that the amount of males to females is greatly in favor of the males.

Lol that was a random conclusion xD. Fanservice is good, as long as the whole anime isn't centered around it.. Then it gets really bad =(

Sh very good question beefjerky. Hmm fanservice doesn't solely occur in anime, it also occurs elsewhere. I was refering to anime when I wrote it, but it can refer to other forms of media as well.
