First, its easier to animate - thus its both a cheat and a dramatic effect. Other reasons include: When the person cannot remember the face in flashback. When the characters are not important. When the story will be spoiled if you could see the face (because the person is searching for that person, and its been many years) When one is to focus not on the other individuals (other then their basic action) but the on the one character in focus/detail. A lot of this surrounds the setup of the human brain. The Fusiform face area, which recognizes faces, requires time to recognize individuals. I trust you have never been in a terror-induced situation, but if you become a cop you'll find out that when people are threatened, they do not remember the face of the person who attacked them. Usually they are more focused on escape, the knife, or the gun. And in anime, when the 'faces' disappear, its usually during a stressful time - remembering a face is simply not that important. |
