Default When was the last time an Anime really, really surprised you?

Let's face it, eventually you'll see enough anime and you can start to predict what will happen next, usually in the last 5 minutes (Sailor Moon and Voltron being easy examples, or that Meer Campbell just ain't gonna make it).

So when was the last time a plot twist/development really knocked your socks off? Or when something really went against the grain?

For example, in Guardian of the Sacred Spirit there were two forces who really were on the same side, but according to anime tradition someone usually does something stupid, and they fight anyway. Except this time common sense came in, and both sides backed off (though that means we miss a fight scene). I simply wasn't expecting this, as usually anime will give us tons and tons of fight scenes almost for the sake of itself.

Remember to please use your best judgment and use SPOILER TAGS when appropriate.

hmm, not much since I don't predict what happens next, I like suspense, but Zero no Tsukaima : Futatsuki no Kishi ep 12 I really thought they would end the series there and not follow the Novel but I guess I thought wrong

thanks for ruining a series I was planning to watch

I could actually say that a lot of anime surprised me in a way that I wasn't expecting too much from them and turned out to be very good, like Mushishi for example, I was expecting some boring thing, but thought I should give it a shot cuz it had very high ratings and everyone said good about it, and it was REALLY good. It was quite unpredictable too. Best anime I've seen so far.

As for something with plot twists, let's say Death Note, Code Geass. almost everybody knows this though. I started watching Monster too, and I can see it turning into an excellent unpredictable psychological thriller.

Also Kekkaishi, it actually used the same formula we know in Shounen anime, but it somewhat did a good job in NOT making the female character, who is a partner with the protagonist, the usual "obsessed with a handsome guy" , "screws up and waits for rescue" , "always whines for no apparent reason or lame reason" etc...

i am surprised at anime that just raise the standard like death note and code geass and such or you expect to be dull and are not mushishi (which requires a certain taste in anime if you will) and rouroni kenshin (expected it to just be another samurai show)
also what is monster about and kekkaishi

Well, now I know what series I should take a look at next.

*nods* I can fully understand what you mean -- when an anime based upon a simple premise, actually weaves the tale better then expected.
So I should add Mushishi to my list, eh?

I was always curious about Monster. Its more then 1 season, so if I have the time I'll pick it up.

*nods* I'm wondering if they will hit a ceiling anytime soon, or will this be a rush of fresh storytelling.
Sure some of the subjects have been done before, but putting in a fresh twist or more well-rounded characters make all the difference. Even putting a Japanese flavor to a European tale makes things different enough for me (that's why I enjoyed RomeoXJuliet)

*ROTFL!!!*
Ok....ok.......breathe......someone in my club said something quite similiar.
But yeah, the filler outta nowhere got most of us.
Then again, the DBZ-style fighting was boring the hell out of me...I enjoyed Nell a helluva lot more (plus her friends) then I did the real characters (other then Orihime). I mean...
Spoiler!
This side arc, along with the hilarious ending-20 second clips allows us to see more of a story, then just constant fights.
Spoiler!

to tell you the truth... no anime has seriously suprised me ever.... Not that I can predict the future or anything but... bleh

I guess the most suprising thing i've ever seen would be the main character from Shining tears x wind pulling a sword out of a frickin guy. Sickening, I don't like watching men moan :/

Oh! Then feel free to be the first person to put that on the poll. Being that no anime has surprised you.

Er.....ouch.
I think in that case, that's an anime for me to stay away from.

'Cause I wholeheartedly agree.

Yep you should definitley watch Mushishi, a very well made anime. Code Geass is one of my favorite anime yes at the start it's very bloody, but that gets reduced.. for a while. The action and the plot twists leave you clinging to your seat and making you want more o.o .. Episode 11 comes out on sunday

Hmm, well I'd have to say that Hayate no Gotoku is the most unpredictable anime , that and Gintama, just when you think you can predict it.. something VERY random comes out of no where.

I like random.

(Moved to the main area for anime discussion. The Sub area is for talking about 1 specific anime ;P)
