First of all I would say that Anime is better than american cartoons because of the real life it depicts...emotions, troubles, ups and downs. It in many cases I believe reflects the human spirit of many different types of people.

It depends which US cartoons you are comparing Anime to, but really there are good and bad in any form of entertainment,so really your question is quite a sweeping generalisation.

Basically, in the West,cartoons are traditionally aimed at kids and thus the stories and characters are simple, there solely to entertain and not to create any real emotional connection with the audience (except in a "good vs evil" scenario, naturally). However,that line has been crossed with such shows as The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, South Park, etc. which are aimed at an older audience.

The Japanese take a more serious approach to their work, seeing animation as another valid medium for telling stories, not limiting it to just a vehicle for kids. Therefore the content will have a more mature approach to it, with heavy moral and thought provoking content, tackling subjects and issues as much as a live action film or series would, or reflecting on their culture and wonderfully deep history.

So,it's not really a case of Anime "being better"than US cartoons, rather a different application and use of a similar tool for storytelling.

Well, mostly for what I've seen, better story, better animation etc.. Not in all anime, but I could say that in average nevertheless. I guess that the fact is, in the US most of the cartoons are really aimed at children or to the whole family, when in anime, there is something for every gender and age-group.

Anime is way better than American Cartoons because they have more action,tragic,plot.

i agree with spim there is no better personally i enjoy anime more but i think south park is funnier of course ive never seen a comical anime but still

Yep as said by Circle and moneytrucks they just have better plot/story, more action, and etc over American Cartoons.

Our cartoons(American) are made more for children and anime is made(or well most) more for older children/teenages/older people.. There are some made for younger(not as much 'bad' things in it) but not as much as made for older people.

But then as said it depends on which cartoons your comparing to and all.. But over all anime is just better due to story/plot, action, and etc.

Guess it depends on the storyline.
Most American cartoons have stories like "good guy versus bad guy" and you could always guess the correct ending because the good guys always win and bad guys became their allies or just ran away. But Japanese animes are different, bad guys don't lose all the time, they sometimes even kill the good guys and take control of the nation or whatever stuff.
Also, there is the animation. I think animes' animations and drawings are better than cartoons. I mean, who would you think it's better if you saw Mickey Mouse and Code Geass at the same time?

Japanese anime have a more shaded approach on their story, meaning it's not always the "good vs bad" story. Their segment are also broader than American cartoons, reaching mature audiences with heavy storylines.

Last but not least, I do agree that the quality in Japanese anime is somehow superior to american cartoon.
